[AUCTION DOMAIN CASE STUDY] Gadgets affiliate making 40 000 $/month using auction domain

Hello! Today we are talking about another great example on how to rank and bank using auction domains
Let’s take a look at

freedom251.com
Bought on 17th of March 2019
Price – 2300 $
RD then – 1722
RD now – 1990
Previously – official website of smartphone Freedom 251

Why it’s an interesting case?

1) It shows the real role of highly relevant niche match.

History
The domain was initially an official website for the world’s cheapest smartphone – it was selling for 251 Indian rupees – about 4 $. No wonder that the domain has attracted that many organic links.

In 3 months after presenting the phone, the domain received links from over 3000 domains – it was a huge spike, but not a spammy one.

Tip 1. High link velocity doesn’t always mean spam, it might be hype. Take a closer look into history to understand it better.

In 2016 the domain was redirected to ringingbells.co.in and stayed until expiration in Feb 2019. Many marketers believe that redirect leads to loss of link juice. So, the domain once redirected, is forever doomed. This example clearly describes it’s not true.
Besides, this idea doesn’t make any sense. Links cannot just dissipate. As long as they are still pointing to the domain, the link juice flows there. If that domain was redirected, the link juice passes to the next domain.
But once the redirect was removed, the link juice returns.

Tip 2. Previously redirected domain doesn’t lose link juice.

Link profile

As you may see, it was of high authority. Because of the ridiculously low price of the smartphone, the website attracted links from many major world news websites on different languages – English, Spanish, Deutsch, Japanese as well as many tech niche links, links from forums etc.

The links were highly concentrated on the homepage, which is a good sign as it doesn’t require restoring the old URL structure.

Niche and content strategy

The niche for a rebuilt website was obvious – gadgets. It’s a logical continuation of the smartphone-related link profile.
But as smartphones themselves is a too narrow niche, going into broader gadgets niche was a good way.

Initially, the content velocity was moderate. Web archive shows only 3 articles in April, 2 in May, 5 in June. But seeing the results the owner increased the speed to
11 in July and is keeping that 8-12 articles per month velocity until now.

Another note – because of the well-structured content the website managed to rank for many featured snippets.

What about traffic?

The results even from the first articles may look astonishing. By 1 st of July there were only 10 articles published, but it was enough to start getting 37000 traffic per month. But there is a big but.

Most of the traffic was from India and was related to that smarphone scam – even now the website is getting 30 % of non-targeted traffic.
I can only imagine how many angry people were spamming the owners by e-mail.

So, to get a real understanding of the real money traffic let’s take a look at the traffic in the US only.

The website really kicked in October-November of 2019 – 6 months after setup. It’s pretty normal speed for a reborn website on auction domain.
But we have seen faster results in our previous cases. The main factor here – content velocity. In case of oldtimemusic domain and learngamingsociety – they managed to rank much faster by publishing content faster (15-20 articles/month comparing to 3-10)

Tip 3. auction domains are receptive to high content velocity on the initial stages.

Currently, the website 167 articles attracting 100 k + of organic traffic in the US in highly fruitful niche.

Total investments
Domain – 2300 $
Content 167*100 + 16700 $.
Additional link building – 10000 $ (approximate)

Total – 29000 $.

Profits – it’s hard to estimate for sure, but let’s use the usual formula for affiliate websites – ahrefs traffic cost/4 = 165000/4 = 41250 $/month.
So, the whole investments are less than 1-month profit.

Building this link profile from the scratch would at least cost 60-80000 $, but the marketer managed to get it for 3 % of the actual value saving 97 % of link budget.

Conclusions

1) High link velocity doesn’t always mean spam, it might be hype. Take a closer look into history to understand it better.
2) Previously redirected domain doesn’t lose link juice.
3) Auction domains are receptive to high content velocity on the initial stages.
